A Family Home Reimagined

At the heart of BesteBakken lies a simple idea: that a stay should offer a true taste of Norwegian culture, nature, and people.

High above Hafslo, overlooking the calm waters of Hafslovatnet, stands BesteBakken — a boutique hotel unlike any other. Created by Lindis Alme and her husband, it is a place where design, art, and hospitality blend into something both deeply personal and profoundly Norwegian. The setting alone invites stillness: rolling hills, open sky, and a lake that changes character with every shift of light, season, and weather.

When Lindis inherited her family’s old farmhouse, she saw not just a building, but a possibility — a chance to express creativity and share her love for the region in a way that felt genuine and lasting. The transformation of BesteBakken was guided by patience rather than speed. Traditional structures were carefully preserved and reimagined, their original character respected while new life was gently woven in.

Handmade details, restored timber, and thoughtful design choices give each space a strong sense of identity. No two rooms are alike. Some feel playful and artistic, others calm and grounding, but all are connected by a quiet dialogue with the landscape outside. Windows frame hills and water, materials echo the surrounding nature, and the house feels anchored — as though it could exist nowhere else.

A Taste of Norwegian Culture, Nature, and People

Life at BesteBakken follows a gentle, unforced rhythm. Mornings begin with a four-course breakfast, served slowly as mist drifts across Hafslovatnet below. Fresh coffee steams in the quiet, and the day opens without urgency.

As hours pass, guests shape their own pace. Some head into the hills for a walk, others linger in the gardens, visit the alpacas grazing nearby, explore local art exhibitions, or simply settle into a chair by the window with a book and a view.

At the heart of BesteBakken lies a simple idea: that a stay should offer a true taste of Norwegian culture, nature, and people. This intention is felt not through grand gestures, but through warmth, openness, and a sense of belonging. Guests are welcomed not as customers, but as visitors to a home shaped by family history and lived experience.

Inside, carefully curated art, antiques, and handcrafted décor create a feeling of nostalgia mixed with creativity. Outside, the hills roll gently toward the lake. Everywhere, the presence of the landscape is felt — in the light that moves across the rooms, the silence that settles in the evenings, and the wide valley views that invite reflection.

Seven Gardens, One Vision

Surrounding BesteBakken are seven distinct gardens, each with its own mood and purpose. Together, they form an extension of the house itself — spaces designed to invite pause, curiosity, and quiet joy.

Some gardens offer solitude, with benches tucked into sheltered corners. Others are filled with color and fragrance in the warmer months. Some exist simply for wandering, for noticing small details, for watching bees move between flowers or clouds drift overhead.

Stone walls, herbs, sculptures, and flowering plants create soft transitions between cultivated ground and wild landscape. The gardens are never static; they change with the seasons, reflecting the same rhythm that shapes life in the valley. Guests are encouraged to move freely between inside and outside, letting time unfold naturally.

A Place Made by Hand, and From the Heart

BesteBakken is not defined by luxury in the conventional sense. Its richness lies in care, creativity, and authenticity. Lindis has built a home that captures the essence of Norwegian hospitality — thoughtful, heartfelt, and deeply rooted in place.

Every choice feels intentional, from the way spaces are arranged to how guests are welcomed. The result is an experience that feels sincere and personal — one that stays with you not because it overwhelms, but because it resonates.

BesteBakken is the kind of place that gently shifts your perspective. It reminds you that beauty doesn’t need to be loud, and that comfort often comes from simplicity, presence, and human connection.

A stay here is not just time away — it is time well spent, shaped slowly, and made by hand.
