Engholm Husky Lodge: An Authentic Arctic Retreat Built By Hand

Save for later
For travelers seeking authenticity, connection, and rare Arctic magic, Engholm Lodge shines as a standout recommendation.

Tucked along the tranquil Karasjohka River, just 6 km outside Karasjok in Northern Norway, Engholm Husky Design Lodge is not just a place to stay—it’s a living story. It is a sanctuary where rugged wilderness meets handcrafted intimacy, where the legacy of sled dogs is woven into every log wall, and where sustainable, slow travel is more than a buzzword—it’s a way of life. For travelers seeking authenticity, connection, and rare Arctic magic, Engholm Lodge shines as a standout recommendation.

Roots and People The Soul Behind Engholm

At the heart of Engholm Lodge is Sven Engholm, the lodge's visionary founder. Originally from Sweden, Sven came to Karasjok searching for something more meaningful—quiet, purity, and wilderness. He found it here, and over decades has built a place that reflects his deep love for nature. Not only is he an experienced outdoor guide, but he’s also a champion musher: an 11-time winner of Europe’s legendary 1,000-km Finnmarksløpet and a top-10 finisher in Alaska’s grueling Iditarod.

Sven didn’t just start a lodge—he handcrafted it. He personally built each of the rustic log cabins, designing every detail from furniture to trimmings using locally foraged materials like wood, stone, leather, and horn. His life partner, Christel, complements his craftsmanship with her own deep artistry: she hand-tans leather and sews garments, cushions, and upholstery using traditional techniques.

Their shared philosophy is rooted in sustainability, respect, and community. Every meal served is made from locally sourced, organic ingredients: reindeer and moose meat, wild-caught fish, garden-grown herbs. Sven and Christel want travellers not just to visit—but to belong.

Supporting this vision is a dedicated team that brings warmth and expertise to each guest experience. Guides like Hans Jörgen Mangset, Emma Sandaker Persson, and Kenny Hansen combine years of mushing experience with genuine hospitality, ensuring every visitor feels cared for and connected to the sled-dog life.

A Place Like No Other: The Accommodation Experience

At Engholm, the cabins are more than just places to sleep—they’re works of art. Each of the six log cabins is unique, with lafte (notched) pine walls, turf roofs, Alta slate flooring, and handcrafted furniture. Decorative touches—like reindeer-antler egg cups or door handles made from birch burl—are not mass-produced but created by Sven himself, reflecting the lodge’s deeply personal character.

There’s no television in the rooms; instead, guests are offered an iPod loaded with local music, and books line handmade shelves in several languages. This is a place designed to slow down, breathe, and absorb.

For comfort and wellness, the lodge offers a wood-heated sauna and, on request, a serene outdoor hot tub under the stars—a perfect way to unwind after a day of Arctic adventures.
