From Blossom to Harvest in Hardanger

Save for later
For generations, families have tended these orchards, and today they remain a central part of Hardanger’s cultural landscape.

The Story

As the year goes by, each season in Hardanger offers its own display of beauty, but nowhere is the region’s character more vividly revealed than in its orchards. From late April, the first buds appear, and by mid-May, the hillsides along the fjord are transformed into seas of pink and white apple blossoms. The flowering period is short, only lasting for about 3–4 weeks into early June, yet it marks the beginning of a cycle that defines life here. For generations, families have tended these orchards, and today they remain a central part of Hardanger’s cultural landscape.

As the weeks progress, blossoms give way to fruit. Early summer brings cherries, followed by plums and pears, and finally apples in late summer and early autumn. By September, the harvest season is in full swing, celebrated with fresh produce, juices, and Hardanger’s renowned ciders.

By October, autumn brings yet another transformation. The orchards shift to vibrant hues of red and gold before the leaves fall, contrasting with the still-blue fjord and snow-dusted peaks above. The scenery is striking, but it is also symbolic: a completion of the cycle that began with spring blossoms.

To experience Hardanger through its orchards is to witness not only natural beauty but also the enduring traditions that connect the landscape, its people, and its visitors.
