The Story of Buer

Save for later
For generations, the Buer family has lived here, working the land, raising animals, and welcoming visitors who came to see the glacier. What was once a simple mountain farm has grown into something extraordinary: a place where tradition, nature, and hospitality come together.

At the end of a winding valley in Hardangerfjord, where the Folgefonna glacier pours its blue-white ice down the mountainside, lies Buer Farm. For generations, the Buer family has lived here, working the land, raising animals, and welcoming visitors who came to see the glacier. What was once a simple mountain farm has grown into something extraordinary: a place where tradition, nature, and hospitality come together.

In the 1970s, travellers would stop by for a glass of fresh milk, homemade bread, or a simple beer. The Buer family opened their doors with warmth and honesty. That spirit never disappeared. Today, when you meet Bjørn Buer and Elisabeth Wesenlund Hauge, you feel that same authenticity—only now, it is expressed through the Buer Restaurant, a barn transformed into a dining room filled with stories, tempting aromas, and life.

When you sit with them, they’ll tell you about the glacier that once pushed into the valley with unstoppable force, about the hard work of farming on this land, and about their decision to invest everything into creating a place where people can taste Hardanger itself. Every plate is made with local produce, wild herbs, lamb from the farm, and fish from the fjord. Every detail reflects their love for this valley and its traditions.

Buer is not simply a restaurant. It is the living story of a family that decided to share their home, their heritage, and their passion. Meeting the Buer family and experiencing their valley is to feel the true spirit of Hardangerfjord—rooted in the past, alive in the present, and looking to the future as the glacier quietly changes above it.
